WORLD CUP HYERES, FRANCE

We achieved our event goal of making the medal race!
New World Ranking: 15th! This qualifies us for the the next World Cup in Weymouth, where both Luke and Nikola competed in the 2012 Olympics. It will be our first trip back there since the closing ceremonies almost 3 years ago!
Rounding the last top mark in FIRST... and finished that race with a bullet :)
Overcoming Adversity! - There was trouble in paradise before we were able to get sailing - first, the trailer wheel bearing brakes just miles form Hyeres, causing a full day setback. Then the coach boat motor fails and needs to spend a week in the shop. Then the car breaks down... and if that wasn't enough, just when we had set the boat up perfectly and were returning from a day of training we were hit by a gust and did a slow motion capsize, our mast snapped as we hit the water. Now our days off became work days, with a little elbow grease and some help from our Brazilian friends who had a spare mast on hand we got it all sorted out again and were in good spirits by the time the races started.
Sad moment - broken mast - trying to recover our sails and untangle everything so we could get towed back to shore.
Check out this video - an incredible re-cap of the medal races!
This event was the first time that the 'new' World Cup format would be used. Only the top 40 boats in the world be attending, with 30 qualifying from their ISAF Rankings and 10 sailing their way in from the most recent EuroSAF Event. This meant that there no longer is a qualifying series (to make Gold/Silver Fleets), which means that there is just 4 days of racing and a medal race. We knew going into the event that the racing would be incredibly tight all week and we set our goals accordingly - consistency was key and our aim was to compete in the medal race (top 10 boats only).
Lift off! Hang on ... they are right on our heels!
After consistent improvement all year we were once again looking to step up our game. On the first day we delivered exactly what we needed - two consistent results left us in the top 15. Day 2 brought beautiful sailing conditions with 14-20 knots blowing straight off the land, making for perfectly flat water and really fast racing. They held 4 races and we posted a 17, 9, 6, 1! Improving through every race and not only showing our speed but also our physical and mental endurance by winning the last race of a long day. Day 3 saw only one light air race where we picked the wrong side of the course but battled our way through the fleet to hold onto another solid finish. Day 4 saw another long day for us and once again our coach Ian preached consistency, we were 9 points out of the medal race and with 4 races left we needed to put some points on our close competitors. We raced hard, taking top 10's in 3 out of the 4 races and walked away meeting our regatta goal of making the medal race!

Being part of the medal race at a World Cup in itself is a feat. Points were very close between boats ranks 5th-10th so there was a possibility of moving up the scoresheet. We sailed a clean race to finish 7th in the medal race, which allowed up to climb the leaderboard one place to 9th overall. We are very happy with our improvement over the last months and will continue to push even harder as we refine our racing skills.
Our drive from Hyeres to Lake Garda was once again an adventure. Our trailer broke down again - this time the other wheel's bearing broke - stranding us in Bellagio in Lake Como. The bearings were hard to find but within 3 days we were back on the road. Special thanks to Hotel Belvedere who went above and beyond to help us out - translating and dealing with the police, truck drivers, mechanics and us!
Big thanks to Will Ricketson for the great photos!
Hot off the press! Results from the World Cup Hyeres.
