DUE DILIGENCE

Merriam-Webster defines Due Diligence in two ways:

  1. The care that a reasonable person exercises to avoid harm to other persons or their property;

  2. Research and analysis of a company or organization done in preparation for a business transaction.

Our team takes the process of Due Diligence very seriously. We have a multi-step process to ensure we continue to use best in class investments in our client portfolio. This is done in three ways:

A. Portfolio Manager Meetings

We have tracked our meetings with Portfolio Managers, CEOs or CFOs of publicly traded companies since the beginning of 2011. Meeting with these managers allows us to ask direct questions about style and process of the investments as well as to assess the character of the managers and consistency of process over the years. From the beginning of 2011 to the end of 2015, we have met on average 104 Portfolio Managers, CEOs or CFOs each year.

B. Asset Allocation Meetings

Each quarter our team meets to debate the appropriate asset allocation (the mix between stocks, bonds, real estate, currency and other asset classes) for our client portfolios. These are lively debates and each Portfolio Manager on the team (Dwight, Tyler, Paul and Neil) brings research from outside sources in order to make a case, if appropriate, that the exposure to a certain asset class, currency or country should be changed. Our team then reaches a consensus and we start the process of adjusting client portfolios based on the decisions made.

C. Investment Selection Meetings

Every two months the Jefferson|Steele Portfolio Managers meet to discuss which fund, direct investment (such as stocks), or Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) should be utilized within each asset class. We use quantitative screens to narrow the investment universe. We then look at returns, risk, cost and consistency of process in order to come to a conclusion. From time to time this process leads us to conclude that the fund or ETF we have been using in not the best choice for that asset class. At that point we would move to sell the incumbent investment and replace it with the new investment.

The due diligence process is at the heart of the investment management part of our practice. We feel strongly that having a well-defined and disciplined process increases the likelihood that portfolios will be able to provide returns that meet our clients’ expectations.
